South Beach Tenby

Type of ground; Clean sandy beach and very long. Although on the very right it can be quite rough ground.

Fish; Bass, dogfish, occasional bream, coalfish, mackerel, occasional cod, eels, turbot, flounder are the main catch here.

Baits; lug is best for bass and cod. Mackerel takes the dogs, bass, eels, flounder, turbot, coalies and occasional bream. Rag is good for the bass, coalies, flounder and dogs. Squid can take bass and dogfish but is inconsistant.

Tackle; Condition dependent again, in calm conditions you can use 2-4oz rods flicked out, or use 4-6oz beachcasters to cast just over the first waves. Rigs should be 2/0 running ledger for bass. 2 hook bombers or flappers with hooks from size 2-1/0 for other fish also bass. Over the rough ground use 3/0 pulley pennels with 50lb snoods.

Other points; Fish from 2 hours before low all the way to high tide, big tides and a decent surf are also very good here. Calm conditions are not as productive. Night time produces the best of the fishing.

Hobbs Point

Type of ground; Very rough within about 80 yards, after that it is mostly clean, i think the bottom is made of mud and sand.

Fish; Cod, conger, whiting, bass, ray, dabs, pouting, pollack, wrasse, triggerfish, poor cod and gobies are the main catch

Baits; Lug and rag worm are the most popular baits. The worm takes nearly all the fish. Mackeral is good for the whiting, aswell as squid, it is good for pouting, gobies and pollack down the side of the wall, this proves fun whilst waiting for the big fish to come along, also you can catch some conger bait in the form of a small pouting or pollack. For conger, use a mackerel or pouting flapper

Tackle; For casting out you will need a 6-8oz rough ground rod or beachcaster. Leads need to be grip leads from at least 6oz to 8oz to hold bottom in the strong tidal run and to get the distance required. Rigs should be pulley pennels with 3/0 or 4/0 hooks with 60lbish throughout. For catching the tiddlers down the wall a 2-4oz light beach rod is perfect. use size 4, 2 hook flappers with 20lb snoods and a 3oz lead. For the conger just flick out a mackerel or pout flapper on a rough ground rod, 6oz rotten bottom and a 5/0 hook on an 80lb snood.

Other points; Only fish here on tides smaller than 6.5metres on the local scale as you will not be able to hold bottom easily and therefore loose a lot of kit. From low tide upto high for best results in the night. The colder months are best.

North Beach Tenby

Type of ground; mostly clean, at either end it is rocky and in the middle of the beach there is a big rock ( goscar rock ) other than this it is clean sand.

Fish; Flounder, dabs, odd plaice, bass, whiting, dogfish, coalfish, gurnard, eels, pollack and mackerel.

Baits; lug and rag are the best baits for the flatties and bass, lug and rag are also good for whiting and coalies as well as mackerel. Mackerel and squid are the top doggie baits here. The gurnards take mackerel best. The mackerel and pollack take the feathers and spinners, it is best for these fish on the very left of the beach on the rocks as it is deeper water.

Tackle; Most days you can use a 2-4oz rod with a 525 size multiplier reel. But if the conditions are rough then use a 4-6oz beachcaster and a 4-5oz grip lead. The best rigs are 2 up 1 downs for the flatties, gurnards, coalies and whiting in size 2, also try adding a few beads and sequins. For the dogs and bass use 1/0 , 2 hook flappers with 1.5 foot snoods.

Other points; Fishes well after a storm when the water is coloured. best tides are the bigger ones. Fish it 2 hours before low and upto high. Night time is usually best. The left hand side is usually better as the water is deeper, its near rocks and the surf is larger here.

Laugharne Estuary

Type of ground; mostly mud with patches of weed and rock close in but all mud at any distance out.

Fish; Mostly flounder, bass and eels.

Baits; Maddies and ragworm for the flounder, lug can be good aswell. Maddies, king ragworm and lug are the main bass baits here.

Tackle; When the tide isn't running much, use 2-4oz light rods with 3-4oz clock and plain leads. Rigs should be 2 or 1 up 1 downs with size 2 hooks with neads and sequins on. For the big bass and when the tide is running use 4-6oz beachcasters with running ledgers with 2/0 hooks and 3-6oz plain leads, also you might need to use grippers when the tide is at full flow.

Other points; Only fish it on small tides as the flow is very string on big tides. Fish here 3 hours before high untill 3 after. It is very muddy in places especially in the rain so beware!

Burton Jetty

Type of ground; Mainly muddy bottom with patches of weed.

Fish; Cod, bass, coalfish, eels, ray, rockling, gobies, wrasse, pouting and whiting mainly.

Baits; Lug and rag are the best, though mackerel and squid are ok.

Tackle; 4-6oz can just about make it, but i would use 6-8oz beachcasters for easier/better results as the tide and ground can be difficult to fish with a 4-6oz rod at times. Rigs should be pulley pennels with 60lb striaght through and 3/0 or 4/0 hooks for the bigger fish. 2 hook clipped downs for the smaller fish with 30lb snoods and size 1/0 hooks.

Other points; The tide here races through on the incoming tide so use fixed wires at about 6-8oz's. Fish the right hand side on the incoming tide, then move to the middle of the jetty on the out going tide as its deeper here. Or you could just stay in the middle but there are holes 60 yards out on both the left hand side and the right.

Band Stand Rocks Tenby

Type of ground; Rocks five yards out but after that its very clean sand.

Fish; Mackerel, bass, gurnard, dab, dogfish, black bream, small rays, turbot, garfish, whiting.

Baits; Mackerel takes the whiting, dabs, dogfish, gurnard, mackerel, turbot, rays and bream. Lug is best for the bass and dabs, also tipped with mackerel is very good for whiting and dabs. Sandeel takes the dogs, whiting, gurnards and bass.

Tackle; 4-6oz beachcasters are the best choice. 4 or 5oz grip leads as there can be a decent current at times. Rigs should be 1/2up 1 downs or up and overs mostly. Use size 1 hooks for the gurnards, dabs, whiting and bream, then size 1/0 for everything else. 20lb snoods will be fine.

Other points; Fish here 3 hours before high untill 2 after. Darkness is better for the winter species such as dabs, whiting and dogfish. It can be crowded in the summer so get there early or go on the morning or night tides for a good spot. The best spot is to the left as it is slightly deeper.

Amroth Beach

Type of ground; Mainly clean sand, on the right under the cliffts there are patches of old wood/mud where a forest used to be. Nothing snaggy.

Fish; Flounder, bass, codling, whiting, coalfish, dogfish and the very occasional sole mainly.

Baits; Lug and rag with maddies are a good bait here for flounders, rag and lug good for bass. Lug and rag for the codling. Macky best for the whiting, coalies and dogfish.

Tackle; I usually use a 4-6oz beachcaster there as i think its only worth fishnig there when its rough/good surf. But when it isn't use 2-4oz light rods for the flatties and other suff close in, 4-6oz rod for the far out work. Best rigs are 2 up 1 downs for the flatties and whiting with 20lb snoods and beads/sequins with size 2 hooks. For the bass, dogfish and cod use a 1/0 two hook flapper with 30lb snoods. Leads should be from 2-3oz when its calm and 3-5 when its rough, don't use a gripleads if there is no other anglers close as you can let the bait roll into holes on its own.

Other points; Fish 2 hours before low and upto high, fish from the railings by the road at high water. Fish it on the better size tides..
